Conquer Cancer

                                     Conquer Cancer

For the first time, Cambridge scientists, including one of Indian origin, have discovered the four-stranded "quadruple helix"DNA in human cells which they say may be key to conquering cancer.

Researchers have proved that four-stranded 'quadruple helix' DNA structures — known as G-quadruplexes — also exist within the human genome and form in regions of DNA that are rich in the building block guanine 'G'.

The study, published in Nature Chemistry shows clear links between concentrations of fourstranded quadruplexes and the process of DNA replication, which is pivotal to cell division and production.

By targeting quadruplexes with synthetic molecules that trap and contain these DNA structures — preventing cells from replicating their DNA and consequently blocking cell division — scientists believe it may be possible to halt the runaway cell proliferation at the root of cancer.

"We are seeing links between trapping the quadruplexes with molecules and the ability to stop cells dividing , which is hugely exciting," said professor Shankar Balasubramanian from Cambridge's department of chemistry. "The research indicates that quadruplexes are more likely to occur in genes of cells that are rapidly dividing, such as cancer cells. For us, it strongly supports a new paradigm to be investigated — using these four-stranded structures as targets for personalized treatments in the future," he said.

Physical studies have shown that quadruplex DNA can form in vitro — in the 'test tube'. Now researchers know for the first time that they actually form in the DNA of human cells. "This research further highlights the potential for exploiting these unusual DNA structures to beat cancer — the next part of this pipeline is to figure out how to target them in tumour cells," said Dr Julie Sharp, senior science information manager at Cancer Research UK.

Lead researcher Giulia Biffi generated antibody proteins that detect and bind to areas in a human genome rich in quadruplex-structured DNA, proving their existence in living human cells. Researchers identified 'hot spots' for the occurrence of fourstranded DNA, using fluorescence to mark the antibodies.

A marked increase was shown when the fluorescent staining grew more intense during the 's-phase' — the point in a cell cycle where DNA replicates before the cell divides.

Cancers are usually driven by genes called oncogenes that have mutated to increase DNA replication — causing cell proliferation to go out of control leading to tumour growth. The increased DNA replication rate in oncogenes leads to an intensity in the quadruplex structures. This means that damaging cellular activity can be targeted with synthetic molecules.

Ripe papaya is excellent for exfoliation of the skin and brings about newer looking skin and generally suits all skin types.

Papaya fruit is a rich source of nutrients such as Provitamin A Carotenoids , vitamin C, B vitamins, lycopene, dietary minerals and dietary fibre. Papaya skin, pulp and seeds also contain a variety of phytochemicals, including natural phenolsfound in the papaya fruit.

BEING HUMAN

                  BEING HUMAN

Anmol, a Delhi-based, 21-year-old boy died in a bike accident recently. A tough call, but his grieving family decided that the untimely death of their young son should bring life to someone else. His family donated all his organs to the AIIMS organ center.
This should serve as an inspiration to others to do the same. The number of organ donations in India is much lower than any other nation. A lack of awareness is cited as one of the main reasons for this poor record.
 Organ donation: What it means
It is the donation of the biological tissue or an organ of the human body from a living or dead person to a living recipient in need of a transplant.

Who can donate?
Almost anyone can donate organs or tissues within certain time limits after death. Oxygen is circulated in the blood through a ventilator so that organs can be used for transplant theSpecialized health professionals assess each person at the time of death to decide which organs and tissues are suitable for donation. Organs that can be donated after death include the heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas, lungs, and small bowel. Living donors can also provide a kidney or part of their liver. On rare occasions, living donors have donated a portion of their lung or small bowel to relatives who were waiting for a transplant.

Who does it benefit?
A person who suffers from brain death can save lives of about eight people as kidneys, lungs, heart, eyes, blood vessels, tissues, cartilage, and other organs can be donated to needy patients.
 Obstacles to donation

-     - -There is a lot of red-tapism and paperwork involved in getting a transplant,

-       -Finding a donor match is difficult,

-      - it is often difficult for family members to accept their loved one is brain dead.

-     - Religious superstitions become impediments.

If 20 percent of families whose member had a brain death donate his or her organs, all requirements for organ transplantation in India would be fulfilled.
According to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, from 1995 to 2011, Tamil Nadu has performed 295 organ donations, Maharashtra 150, Andhra Pradesh 137, Delhi 64, Uttar Pradesh nine and Chhattisgarh seven.
We need to change people's mindset and show them why organ donation must be done.
Becoming a donor
One simplest ways is register is at the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles). When a person goes in to renew their license they are always presented with becoming a donor. With just the simple check of the “Yes” box and a signature, a person can become a donor.
Another way for someone to become an organ donor is online.
The National Network for Organ Donors or Donate life Colorado and select the tab that says, “Become a donor.” This will prompt a series of questions from name, ID number, to specifications of donation;
